Brain Power

Practical skills training for the brain's control system — for children, teens, and adults.

“It does not treat the diagnosis but it helps to deal with it.”

The heart of Brain Power, in the author's own words.

The Five Skills

Five skills train the brain's control system. Each one has a cue phrase — short words a child, a teen, or an adult can say in the moment.

Two brains in every head

Every brain has two gears. The fast brain reacts in a flash — it jumps, shouts, grabs, runs. The thinking brain is slower and wiser — it pauses, remembers, chooses, and plans. Brain Power trains the thinking brain to take the lead, one small skill at a time.

Brake Pedal

“Stop. Breathe. Choose.”

Pause before you act — even when the feeling is big.

Mental Notepad

“See it. Say it. Keep it.”

Hold a thought in mind while you use it.

Steering Wheel

“New way, same goal.”

When one way stops working, turn toward another way.

Calm-Down System

“Slow it down to turn it around.”

Settle the body so the mind can think clearly again.

Roadmap

“First, next, last.”

Know where you are going — and the order to get there.

About Alvin

Alvin Alvarez, M.Ed., taught special education for many years. Today he is a Case Manager (QMHP-CS) in Laredo, Texas, serving children ages 5–15.

He built Brain Power from his classroom work on executive functions and neuroplasticity — after seeing students who had been told they could not read or write doing both by mid-year. Practice, repeated in small steps, can strengthen the brain's control system.

He lives in Laredo, Texas with his wife, Araceli. Together they share a blended family of five children.
